The work is written as a dialogue between prominent figures of the Middle Roman republic and is set after the death of the younger Scipio Africanus (otherwise known as Scipio.
De Amicitia is not necessarily Cicero's easiest prose, but by no means his most difficult. It seems however, to avoid grammatical monotony, thus I find De amicitia book a good text for acquainting intermediate students with a variety of possible constructions.
The language of De Amicitia is not as highly nuanced as much of Cicero's other work, and in his Cited by: 4. Sed ut tum ad senem senex de senectute, sic hoc libro ad amicum amicissimus scripsi de amicitia.
Tum est Cato locutus, quo erat nemo fere senior temporibus illis, nemo prudentior; nunc Laelius et sapiens (sic enim est habitus) et amicitiae gloria excellens de amicitia loquetur. Tu velim a me animum parumper avertas, Laelium loqui ipsum putes.

The second text in the present manuscript, De Amicitia - also dedicated to Atticus - was written by Cicero in 44 B.C., shortly after the death of Julius Caesar and before the conflict with Antony. He based his work on early Greek philosophers such as Plato and Theophrastus.
Cicero's essay On Friendship (de amicitia) is of interest as much for the light it sheds on Roman society as for its embodiment of ancient philosophical views on the subjects of friendship. The Dream of Scipio was excerpted in late antiquity from Cicero's De Republica.
